Inuit perspectives must shape disability policies and research from the beginning. NDKF is creating more opportunities for Inuit knowledge, priorities, and lived experience to guide decisions.
Every day, decisions are made that affect the lives of disabled people. Governments develop legislation. Researchers establish priorities. Organizations design programs. Funding agencies decide which projects move forward. Yet Inuit perspectives are often underrepresented in many of these discussions.
When Inuit voices are absent, important realities can be overlooked. The unique challenges and strengths of Northern communities, the impacts of geography and language, the importance of relationships and community wellbeing, and the diversity of Inuit experiences may not be reflected in the decisions being made.
The National Disability Knowledge Forum believes Inuit voices should be present wherever disability policies, research, and systems are being discussed.
Meaningful representation goes beyond consultation. It means creating opportunities for Inuit priorities, knowledge, and lived experiences to influence decisions from the beginning.
As the Forum continues to grow, we are seeking individuals who share this vision and who are interested in helping guide the organization’s future. We welcome conversations with people who have lived experience, community knowledge, research expertise, policy experience, or a commitment to strengthening disability inclusion across Inuit Nunangat.
If you are interested in learning more about future Board of Directors opportunities or advisory roles, we encourage you to contact us. Together, we can help ensure Inuit priorities are represented in disability conversations across Canada.
